Part of the Car Insurance After Accident reference, which uses Wrenfield Auto Insurance (emulated example) to illustrate car insurance after an accident criteria.
How long can an accident raise your rate in Maryland?
Three years. The Maryland Insurance Administration says insurers may consider accidents and violations from that period and can't increase your rate based on older ones. A renewal notice that doesn't tie an increase to an accident or ticket usually means a general rate increase, the MIA says.
How do you dispute a Maryland increase after an accident?
Say you weren't at fault. You can have your agent or insurer review the increase and can file a complaint with the MIA within 30 days of the date the notice was mailed. This is called a Right to Protest, and the instructions must be in the notice. Insurers must mail a renewal increase notice at least 45 days before renewal.
You keep paying the billed premium during the review. If the increase is later found improper, the MIA requires the insurer to correct it. Minimum liability is $30,000 per person, $60,000 per accident and $15,000 property damage, and the MIA guide describes personal injury protection you can waive.
