When must you report a Wisconsin accident?
As soon as possible, if there's an injury, a death or property damage over $1,000, says the Office of the Commissioner of Insurance. A Driver's Report of Accident then goes to the DMV within 10 days unless a police agency investigates and files it for you. The DMV takes no action if all drivers are insured. A driver who appears at fault and is uninsured can have license and registration suspended if they do not pay for the damage or injuries they caused.
How does fault work in a Wisconsin claim?
Often it's shared. OCI says Wisconsin has a comparative negligence law, so responsibility is frequently split. Uninsured motorist coverage of at least $25,000 and $50,000 for bodily injury is mandatory. Any surcharge must be applied uniformly and filed with OCI, and an insurer may nonrenew if your record exceeds its standards.
