Does accident forgiveness help?
Wrenfield Auto Insurance (emulated example) → Car insurance after an accident → Clear accident rating rules → Verifiable licensing
Answer in brief
Accident forgiveness helps only if its terms cover your accident and it costs less than the increase it prevents. The NAIC says it may be unnecessary for safe drivers paying standard rates.

What is accident forgiveness?
The NAIC describes accident forgiveness as an insurer's agreement not to raise your premium after a driver is involved in an at-fault accident. It says the feature is sometimes included in a standard policy, usually at a higher premium, and is more often sold as an optional endorsement for a fee. The article calls it enticing but warns that it comes with conditions and limits.
That article dates from 2009 and was last modified in 2024, and insurers change their products, so treat it as a description of how the feature generally works. Your policy wording is what counts.
Who does accident forgiveness actually help?
The NAIC says safe drivers paying standard rates may find it unnecessary, depending on its cost, while drivers with violations or accidents who already pay higher rates may save money over time. It suggests comparing costs with your current insurer and a few others.
You can test it with arithmetic. Take the yearly cost of the feature and multiply it by the years you expect to keep it. Compare that with the increase your insurer says an accident would cause and how long it would last. If your insurer will not give you those figures, you cannot tell whether the feature is worth buying.
What should you ask before paying for it?
Get each of these answers in writing. Ask, too, whether it would apply to an accident that has already happened; the NAIC article does not address that, so do not assume that it would. If your accident was in the past, forgiveness bought today may only be of use for the next one.

| Term | What the NAIC says varies | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| How it is sold | Included in a policy, usually at a higher premium, or sold as an endorsement for a fee. | What does it add to my premium each year? |
| Eligibility | Usually years of loyalty to the insurer and a clean record for several years. | Do I qualify today, and on what date? |
| Violations | Some insurers count them, so a single speeding ticket could affect eligibility. | Does a ticket remove or delay it? |
| Waiting period | Some policies require up to five years of a clean record; others start immediately. | When does it begin to apply? |
| Number of accidents | Some forgive one accident, others multiple. | How many, over what period? |
